High school sailing, spring fling at Shumway Marine and Lake Ontario salmon
Spring has finally landed, and activity has picked up in all the marinas and yacht clubs. It’s heartwarming to see boats launching on a regular basis. Makes it almost possible to bury memories of the last six months of winter weather!
Irondequoit HS Sailing Team Takes Home Dual Wins
The high school sailing program run by the Rochester Yacht Club has been active for a month now and this past weekend, April 15 and 16, the Irondequoit HS Team was over at Buffalo YC for the NYISA Fleet Race Qualifier and the NYISA All Girls Championship. It was a very successful trip for the Irondequoit sailors, winning both events by healthy margins! Congrats to all of our HS sailors for their hard work, training, and practice in sometimes very challenging spring conditions. See results below.
Saturday dawned warm and sunny for the NYISA-NW fleet race qualifier. The winds started off light from the north and at around 11:30 am, the wind shifted to the southwest and filled in at five to eight knots. A total of eight races were completed in each fleet before hitting the dock just after 2 pm.

It was a hot and sunny Sunday for our all-girls qualifier. We waited on land in postponement until 11:45 am when the wind picked up to two to four knots from the southwest. We were able to get a total of six races in before the wind completely died and headed back to the dock at 1:45 pm.

Lake Ontario Salmon
The Lake Ontario salmon population will go up by about 100,000 in the next few weeks. Again this year, volunteers from the Lake Ontario Charter Boat Association are working with the DEC to release 100,000 five-inch baby King Salmon into the Genesee River. The fish, no bigger than an inch, were dumped by the DEC from a tanker truck into holding bins at Shumway Marine a few weeks ago.
Local volunteers watch over the fish and feed them five times a day while they grow and get acclimated to the river. I am told they will live in the Great Lakes and return to the Genesee River in four years… sort of like your millennial kid moving home after college? There’s a similar program that is run in Youngstown with walleye.
